Where to stay?
We were recommended by some friends to find accommodation near Camps Bay, the so-called Bevery Hills of CT. CB lays at the beach and has an avenue filled with cozy restaurants, sushi bars, cocktail bars etc. We booked a room through Airbnb and had a very nice time.
What to do?
– Of course you have to hike either the Lion’s Head or the Table Mountain (preferably both). Make sure to start hiking very early in the morning (we were both severely sunburnt) or the late afternoon so you can enjoy the sunset. For the TM you can either choose to go up by elevator, but really; take the challenge and climb your way up ;-).
– Visit Muizenberg, known for its cute beach with the colorful cottages, is the perfect spot for surf newbies to charge their first waves. It’s a beach break with sand bottom, so no excuse to go a 100%. Plus, the water isn’t that cold as it in CB and you have some shark spotters to keep you save.
– Check out the penguin Mekka, Boulders beach. We arrived with high expectations but got cooled down really fast when we saw only 3 penguins from five miles away. Apparently during the touristic peak period of December and January the penguins tend to stay back because Boulders is too crowded with sun seekers. Thank God, next to Boulders beach is a reserve where you can see plenty of penguins in their natural habitat. The entrance fee is only R40. So it’s a bit of a tourist trap if you expect to hang out with penguins and get a face-to-face encounter or epic selfie.
– Kaap de Goede Hoop: simply a must, due to its beautiful views and nature at its purest. Choose to go during The Golden Hour for magnificent views over the cliffs.
– Helicopter flight: said to be the best chopper tour in the world. Marine life, mountains, epic city; you get a glimpse of everything Cape Town has to offer in only 25 minutes. We got to see a whole pod of dolphins from above. Try to book your flight early in your stay so you can schedule the rest of your trip. Thanks to the tips of Pilot Lisa we added some to do’s to our trip.
– Visit Bo Kaap:
Where to eat?
– If you’re up to a healthy breaky, CT offers a variety of possibilities. We tried out the Truth coffee HQ and Nü Foodbar for granola and avo toasts. When in Camps Bay visit KAUAI or the local street juicer for healthy juices. + Tribe Coffee
– For dinner have a shot at one of the many restaurants in Camps Bay. We went to Bilboa, Paranga and Zenzero.
– Kloof Street is a hidden food gem with lots of hotspots. Kloof Street restaurant for the meat lovers, Asoko for Asian tapas and an on point cocktail menu. No need to make reservations weeks in advance, just make a phone call the day before. Such a pity we only discovered this vivid street the last night…
– Beach resto The Bungalow in Camps Bay is a m’as tu vu place to have lunch. Good food but can get pretty windy.
Bad weather options:
- Although Cape Town is craving water for months and there’s even a water restriction, we didn’t expect rainy, cloudy days. For us the ideal moment to visit the touristic but pleasant V&A waterfront where there’s apart from a shopping mall (with the typical Topshop, Zara stores etcetera) also a covered food market with all kinds of different food stands – from customized donuts to oysters.
- Culture fans should definitely go visit the new Museum of Modern Arts or Nelson Mandela’s cell on Robben Island.
